The Tsunami Series -  Encaustic Paintings/Giclee Prints

This series is a meditation on Radical Disruption – the transformation of land and lives disrupted by the powerful forces of nature. Tsunami’s wipe out everything they touch on the surface of the earth and reveal or re-shape what remains.

Giclee Prints - Printed on fine art paper using archival inks.  Dimensions:  38”x38” to 20”x20"

Paintings - Encaustic, Beeswax, Oil Stick, Oil Pastel, Graphite on wood panels.  Dimensions: 12”x12” to 5" x 5"

Description: Encaustic painting involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. The liquid/paste is then applied to a surface—usually prepared wood. This technique was notably used in the Fayum mummy portraits from Egypt around 100-300 AD – the portraits survived due to being encased in beeswax.

Giclee prints connotes an elevation in printmaking technology.  Images are generated from hi-resolution digital scans and printed with archival inks on fine art paper. They are “state of the art” prints.

Like the forces of nature, hot beeswax is fluid and difficult to control, whereas giclee printmaking is a highly controlled process.  My work is focused on the fusion of the ancient and the modern – the techniques of the past conversing with the technology of today.  Scanning the paintings, enlarging the images, reveal unseen details not apparent in the original artwork.
